Definitions of Play: 'Play is of fundamental importance for children and young people's health and well-being.'

Planning for Play, 2006 “Play means what children and young people do when they follow their own ideas and interests, in their own way and for their own reasons.”

Definition used in the play review Getting Serious about Play Published in 2004. “All children need to play and have a right to play. Children of all ages should be able to play freely and confidently on their own and with other children”

The Charter for Children’s Play, developed in 1998 (Children’s Play Council) Play has been acknowledged as an important factor in children’s development, linked to intellectual, motor and personal and social development. Play is related to the development of creativity, healthy brain development, self confidence, resilience and health and fitness.
